35th JSCM (Japan Society for Contemporary Music) Award for Composers
Application Guidelines
Jury
Jummei Suzuki (Chair), Takashi Tokunaga, Toshiya Watanabe
Theme: Contemporary Music and Counterpoint
Counterpoint is the compositional technique of having multiple lines of music sounding together, governed by fixed rules. First of all, what kind of musical material should be used? And how should that material – whether it’s the same material repeating or contrasting material – be arranged? Thinking about and composing through this question can be said to be the true pleasure of counterpoint. Contrapuntal techniques have been used by composers from Ockeghem and Palestrina to Messiaen, Boulez, and Ligeti, but, thanks to the musical styles of different eras and the ingenuity of the individual composers, there is a great variety in their music. In the 21st century, I hope that new pieces exploring new possibilities in this historical technique can be created.

36th JSCM (Japan Society for Contemporary Music) Award for Composers
Application Guidelines
Jury
Toshiya Watanabe (Chair), Tomoko Fukui, Satoshi Minami
Theme: What is newness?
‘Newness’ is one of the criteria people use to evaluate any freshly-created thing, and composition is no exception to this general principle. However, what is considered ‘new’ can differ depending on how each person thinks and, in the case of composition, those differences can be vast. Furthermore, our present era has no centrally-agreed standards against which these things can be judged. I’m looking forward to seeing the various approaches each individual composer to the interpretation of ‘newness’ within their creative practice, including the possibility that it should be put aside as a relic of the past.
– Toshiya Watanabe, Jury Chair
